If “‘Indie-Prod’ is Hollywoodese For Failure”, Then…

Oh, the horror.

I went to NFFTY (National Film Festival for Talented Youth) thinking “Hey, I can blow everyone away next year!”

But oh, how painfully wrong I was.

The age limit is 22 and under, so college students can enter this… And let’s just say, these are real freaking productions. Like freaking real, freaking freak. The credits had hundreds of people, even a producer and DoP! One of the best films was done by a student from USC, and it was, well, amazing. I’d like to take this time to quote some required reading I am doing for NYFA (In Adventures in the Screen Trade By William Goldman):

“‘Indie-Prod’ is Hollywoodese for Failure”

I just learned that I am Indie, and that I might be screwed over by these chumps.

Why am I sad to be Indie? Because in the past, I have always ranted on Indie Production and how lame it was. But oh, I have a whole new respect for this dark side of this moon. Let’s see… I am my own:

  • Producer
  • Director
  • Art Director
  • Camera WO-man
  • Cinematographer
  • Editor
That’s six freaking roles.
All I can say is, well, I cannot wait for high school. The VisCom teacher, apparently, has some students working with real producers.
Living, breathing, producers.
And well, that is when I bail from fail. But right now, If I am Indie, I will be the best freaking Indie.
